Preface
This simple book is about the use of solar
energy at our home. The chapters talk about the renewable
energy and its importance for a sustainable living. The amazing
journey of solar power from being one providing only daylight to
be an alternate source for energy to mankind and its life saving
impact is scripted here through different chapters. Our scientists
have tirelessly worked to bring solar to its current form of ready to
use packaged power. It is a naked truth today that the journey of
harnessing solar energy has made substantial achievements. But
as it always has been, much more of sun and the use of its energy
remained unexplored of what science have achieved so far.
Solar energy is now the cleanest form of energy.
Even though it remained the most difficult to harness among
renewables, solar energy has now come off age and poised to
compete directly with grid electricity in this decade. Worldwide
solar energy is seeing exponential growth with support from the
Investors, Industry, Governments, Environmentalists and
Customers among others. There are many established and
evolving technologies to harness solar power.
Solar power installations are currently the fastest
growing among all power generation installations. With a
stupendous growth worldwide, Solar in India is aligning itself for a
revolutionary growth in installation and usage. Since the seventies
the Government of India has supported and encouraged utilization
of solar energy. Now we have the ambitious programme of JNSM
with a mission target of 20GW by 2022.
A few chapters in this book may contain an
excess of numbers and graphical representations. Some other
chapters provide technical details. These information is here to
emphasize the fact that – Solar will work and is working around
the world. I have tried to make these as simple as possible for all
discerning readers to easily understand.
The introductory chapter of the book looks into
the history of solar energy. The next couple of chapters get more
specific on solar energy and its usage. The amazing range of
products that work on solar which gives us an alternate to grid
power is briefed here next.
The next session of the book talks about climate
change, its impact on our ecology and an exhaustive list of
organizations working to combat climate change. This is followed
by the solar energy utilisation around the world.
India’s power requirements is then followed by the
status of solar power in India, The aggressive action plan of the
government of India, a serious look on why to minimize the use of
grid power and then the tips for selecting and installing the right
solar system for your use.
The wonderful concept of world’s first carbon
neutral city comes next followed by a chapter on the importance of
energy efficiency. The world of renewables has an astonishing
range of power generation techniques and this is detailed in the
next chapter. This is followed by the chapter on Green buildings.
The main book comes to a landing with a chapter on one of the
most promising concept – Electric Vehicles.
The centurial range of solar products, a list of
solar power plants around the world, the current stake holders of
solar in India, the banks supporting solar initiative through various
credit schemes are all listed. A few details on the power of
household equipments, useful units of power culminate in
completing this book on contemporary science and its imminent
use.
I had thought for sometime now that the
subject of solar energy use and sustainable living needs more
explanation which will help in popularizing solar energy utilization
to the common man. This was reinforced while I set out to sell the
solar products for retail homes, more so when I was encountered
with a variety of questions. This book is an attempt in this regard.
